Deadwood Dick Library No. 9: Hurricane Nell's Revenge

· 1928

This issue of the Dick Turpin Library contains a Western adventure serial titled "Hurricane Nell's Revenge." In Chapter I, outlaw Bob Woolf and his gang give the sick, isolated family of Bill Allen (a "spotter" working against outlaws) ten hours to evacuate before they burn down the cabin and surrounding prairie. Twelve-year-old Nellie Allen vows revenge as prairie fires consume her home and kill her parents. Chapter II, set five years later, introduces Cecil Burnett, a Philadelphia lawyer arriving at a mining settlement seeking information about a man named Luke Rice. Burnett learns that a guide named Hurricane Nell—revealed to be the now-grown Nellie Allen, devoted entirely to avenging her parents' deaths by hunting the outlaws responsible—can be hired. Chapter III shows Nell arriving at the tavern in disguise as an elderly beggar, collecting donations while serving as agent for guide services.
