# Deadwood Dick and Red Brand

This dime novel serializes the adventures of the notorious outlaw-turned-citizen Deadwood Dick in the Idaho mining town of Eureka. After arriving with his elderly partner Old Avalanche, Dick enters the saloon "The Man-Trap" where he bets his life against the mining claim "Big Bonanza," wagering he can place twenty-four successive revolver shots in a single spot on a target. He succeeds, winning the mine from a mysterious rival named Red Brand and earning astonishment from the townspeople. A waitress warns Dick that Carlos Cambre, a former gang member and runaway husband, lurks in town seeking revenge. As Dick converses with the saloon-keeper Noisy Nell, an incoming stage brings mysterious arrivals, including a heavily veiled woman whose appearance startles him profoundly.
