The narrative follows Professor Vincent Crichton, a young academic invited to research the history of River House, a Southern antebellum plantation mansion built on an island. Upon arrival, Crichton experiences an unsettling vision of the boatman Hombo appearing skeletal before he regains normal appearance. The story establishes supernatural atmosphere through a slave legend: during construction, enslaved workers died en masse from exhaustion, disease, and brutal punishment. One executed slave allegedly cursed the house and its inhabitants before dying. The tale begins revealing strange occurrences—two overseers who whipped this slave died within a year under mysterious wasting conditions doctors couldn't diagnose. Crichton arrives during the house's 150th-anniversary celebration, attended by descendants of the original five founders, while the mysterious ill Mr. Molyneux remains bedridden.
