Beyond Fantasy Fiction, Vol. 1, No. 4

· 1954

This issue of Beyond Fantasy Fiction (January 1954) contains three lead stories. "Call Me Wizard" by Evelyn E. Smith is a novelette about Philip Gardner, a minor wizard married to the supremely talented sorceress Dorothea. Coveting escape and another life, Philip discovers a spell to exchange existences with his counterpart in an alternate realm—a similar-looking man named Philipp. Philip executes the transfer while Dorothea isn't watching, intending to assume Philipp's life elsewhere. However, Philipp arrives in Philip's magical medieval world instead, where Dorothea's firelit chamber becomes mystifyingly familiar. The exchange has created comedic confusion: Philipp, a scientist in a witches' realm, finds himself married to a powerful sorceress in a house addressed as 379 Dulcamara Drive. The story explores the unintended consequences of Philip's escape attempt.
