Beadle's Pocket Library No. 161

· February 9, 1887

This issue of the weekly pulp magazine features the opening installment of "Bob Rockett, the Cracksman: Driven to the Wall" by Charles Morris, part of a series about the titular character. The story begins with Bob Rockett, a well-dressed New York traveler, arriving at a frontier hotel in Little Rock, Arkansas, where he encounters the beautiful Marie Delorme. After a flirtatious exchange, he visits her home and discovers she and her "cousin" George Anderson are con artists planning to fleece him at cards. The narrative then shifts to New York, where Grace Garland awaits word of whether her estranged husband George Delorme—who sent threatening letters—is alive or dead, while her lover Paul Essex departs to investigate. The final section returns to Little Rock, showing Delorme (using the alias Anderson) and Marie dealing cards in a game of brag with the shrewd Bob Rockett, who proves alert to their schemes.
