"The Girl Sport: A Story of the Poker Pocket Pards," by J. C. Cowdrick, depicts a mining-camp mystery in the wild Southwest. Three companions—Pompey, Paddy, and Pretzel—witness the discovery of Laura Greenbough's murder. The mine-manager's daughter and beloved fiancée to superintendent Edwin Cutter has been stabbed. Suspicion immediately falls on Sid Sullivan, a discharged miner who threatened revenge against both Greenbough and Cutter that morning after losing his employment. Sullivan had hoped to reclaim the lucrative "Sullivan's Snap" mine, which rightfully derived from his original gold discovery. Found washing his hands suspiciously when apprehended at his cabin, Sullivan appears guilty of the crime. The three pards, however, harbor doubts despite Sullivan's threats and circumstantial evidence, believing him incapable of such violence. Big Bill Crawford joins them in demanding definitive proof before condemning Sullivan to death.
