# Catalog Description

Headlight Harry's Flyer: The Story of the White Phenix by Col. A. F. Holt is a railroad adventure serial occupying this 1893 Beadle and Adams weekly issue. Chapter I depicts young engineer Headlight Harry heroically managing a dual train crisis on Jacob's Ladder grade: he first outpaces runaway freight cars threatening an express train, then diverts them onto a siding to avoid collision with a pursuing Special train. Chapter II shifts to a wedding anniversary celebration at magnate Gilbert Garland's mansion in Richville. During festivities honoring Garland's daughter Grace and her husband Ralph Renwood (superintendent of the R. & S. R.R.), an incendiary fire at the stables serves as cover for a kidnapping. A mysterious assailant abducts Grace, leaving a threatening note pinned by bowie knife, signed by "Mad River" and invoking vengeance, suggesting prior criminal entanglement with Renwood.
