# Catalog Note

This issue features the opening installment of "Kodak Kate's Secret Seven" by Ed. L. Wheeler, author of the Deadwood Dick novels. The story follows Deadwood Dick, Junior, a Western detective and gambler who arrives at the isolated camp of Corduroy Crossing seeking to win money at cards. Before reaching the camp, he encounters Nugget Nell (Nellie Mason), a young woman who warns him away, though he ignores her advice. At a guarded corduroy road crossing the marsh surrounding the island settlement, a rifleman interrogates Dick but allows him to pass after learning his profession. The guard mentions excitement at the camp—citizens preparing to execute a suspected Government spy—and notes that Nugget Nell runs a card game at the Howler saloon, where she is known for her skill. Dick proceeds toward the camp, intending to investigate the commotion.
