This issue of Beadle and Adams' weekly (No. 719, Vol. LXXVIII, 1891) features "The Cowboy Kidnapper's Doom" by Col. Prentiss Ingraham, companion story to "Carl, the Mad Cowboy."

Carl Grafton, a ship's seaman of mysterious past, is rescued from drowning by merchant Rufus Dunn and later hired as his clerk. Years pass; Carl prospers and becomes engaged to Dunn's daughter Emma. However, Carl's half-brother—a fugitive with their father imprisoned for murder and forgery—arrives demanding blackmail money, threatening to expose their criminal family history. Simultaneously, Dunn discovers Carl allegedly gambling nightly and dismisses him. Carl sells his house and flees with his mother to Texas. Arrested mid-journey for Rufus Dunn's murder by dagger, Carl's mother dies from shock. Carl faces trial for a crime he did not commit, suspecting his half-brother committed the killing while impersonating him at the gambling tables that night.
