Beadle's Dime Novels No. 233: The Privateer's Bride

· July 4, 1871

This issue collects two serialized stories from Beadle's Dime Novels. "The Forest Specter: The Young Hunter's Foe" by Edward Willett follows a young hunter and forest veteran who lose a beautiful girl while piloting her through the wilderness from Virginia settlements to Kentucky stockades; a mysterious "siren voice" leads the hunter astray, deepening the mystery of her disappearance. "The Privateer's Bride" by J. R. Caldwell concerns the Sea Gull, an American privateer that has raided British shipping for two years. Caught in a violent Atlantic storm off Bristol Channel, the vessel approaches rocky breakers while hostile shore inhabitants refuse aid. A mysterious lantern signal from an inland castle guides pilot Terrence O'Toole through a hidden passage to safety, though the ship remains endangered and observers onshore plot against the crew.
