MOHAWK NAT: A TALE OF THE GREAT NORTH WOODS

This serial by W. J. Hamilton features the ranger Mohawk Nat Hazard and Captain Lewis Miller in colonial-era New York during the conflict between English and French forces. The story, set during the French and Indian War before General Wolfe's fame, opens near the Mohawk River with a group of colonial militiamen organizing against French-incited Indian raids that have devastated the border settlements. When a raiding party burns settler Tom Turner's house, Nat and Miller lead men north toward Canada Creek in pursuit.

Nat—a garrulous, pugnacious tracker with legendary strength—argues for aggressive pursuit while Miller demonstrates tactical restraint. As they follow the trail, Nat discovers a discarded women's moccasin bearing Indian beadwork, suggesting a woman travels with the Huron war party. The discovery prompts continued pursuit through increasingly dangerous territory.
