Astounding Science Fiction, British Edition

Β· September 1946

This September 1946 British edition of Astounding Science Fiction contains six stories. The featured novelette "The Nightmare" by Chan Davis depicts a near-future New York City under atomic threat, where Dr. Robert Ciccone, chief of the Bronx Sector Radioactive Search Commission, finds himself embroiled in scandal when newspapers conflate his warnings about inadequate bomb-detection measures with his sector's supposed failure to intercept smuggled radioactive materials. Arthur C. Clarke's novelette "Rescue Party" is also included. Short stories are "The Cure" by Lewis Padgett, "A Son Is Born" by A.E. van Vogt, "Alexander the Bait" by William Tenn, "Placet Is a Crazy Place" by Fredric Brown, and an entry with partially garbled OCR credited to Philip (author unclear). The issue contains editorial material and classified advertising for engineering training courses.
