This Fall 1944 issue of Frontier Stories features Western adventure fiction centered on frontier freighting and settlement. The primary serial, "Freighters, West!" by William Heuman, concerns Jay Brandon, a Colorado freight handler newly arrived in Nebraska City. Brandon witnesses violence against an Excelsior Freighting Company teamster and intervenes in a brawl against multiple assailants. He is aided by Sam Freeman, a mysterious buckskin-dressed scout armed with a Dragoon Colt. Brandon learns that John Warburton's Excelsior company has secured a government contract to supply Fort Taylor in Sioux territory, arousing violent opposition from the larger Lamonte, Darcy and Simmons concern. Brandon applies to Warburton for the wagon master position and meets Warburton's daughter, Priscilla. The issue also includes Tom W. Blackburn's "Captain Tomahawk," featuring Tal Hastings navigating the Missouri River fur trade, and shorter pieces including "Doom on the Trail" by James P. Webb and "Hell's Caravan" by M. Howard Lane, all depicting frontier hazards and wilderness conflict.
