The Wolf Master by Harold Lamb
This December 1926 issue of Adventure magazine features Harold Lamb's complete novel set during the early 17th-century Time of Troubles in Russia. The story opens on a snowed steppe village where three Cossacks—the young Kirdy, the giant warrior Ayub, and an elderly companion—arrive seeking fresh horses amid distant cannon fire. After a Polish-Cossack battle, they find the innkeeper has no mounts available, having been commandeered by both noble boyars and Cossack forces. The issue also includes serials "Treasure" (Part IV) and "The Way of Sinners" (Part IV), short stories by T.T. Flynn ("The Super of the Santee"), Richard H. Watkins ("East of the Bishop"), and W. Townend ("A Night in San Asensio"), plus Vachel Lindsay's poem "The Mountains Are the Members of Our Family." Supporting departments cover adventure travel, natural history, and correspondence.
