Adventure (Canada), March 1943

· March 1943

This March 1943 issue of Adventure features primarily wartime-themed fiction. "Warden of the Zone" by Jock Cunningham, a novelette, follows Ramos, a bitter Panamanian, and Sandenis, his idealistic childhood companion, as they work on defensive fortifications at the Panama Canal. The story explores Ramos's resentment of Americans and temptation to sabotage the locks, contrasted with Sandenis's patriotic devotion. Jim Kjelgaard's "The Snow Devil" depicts a trapper's moral test when a starving stranger arrives at his cabin during an Alaskan winter. "Slow Bell" by Reese Wolfe concerns a ship captain trapped in Nazi-occupied Norway during the 1940 invasion. Charles T. S. Gladden's "Bread on the Water" follows an ensign on an aircraft carrier who shoots down five Japanese planes. Barre Lyndon concludes "The Sword of Qualoon," set in Sudan's historic Suakin. Other stories include a lighter piece on mistaken identity and an adventure in Papua's jungles. A poem by Florence Burrill Jacobs and humorous western yarn round out the issue.
