This summer 1951 issue of Detective features five detective novellas and supporting short stories. Richard Deming's "The Killer from Buffalo" opens the collection: a Buffalo police sergeant arrives in a small Missouri town to investigate Sam Stone's apparent guilt in a robbery-murder, finding physical evidence inconsistent with the official account—the victim's body position suggesting he died before being struck by a train. Gerald Verner contributes "The Next to Die," featuring a murdered girl and a killer with a whip. C.T. Fleming-Roberts offers "And Here Comes Murder," involving a model, money, and criminal intrigue. Fredric Brown's "Homicide Sanitarium" presents a newlywed detective hired to pose as a mental patient. Cyril Plunkett's "Death Walks in Circles" follows Bart's discovery of a fresh corpse and subsequent troubles.
