Fifteen Western Tales, March 1954

· March 1954

This March 1954 issue of Golden West Tales contains two lengthy Western novelettes and six short stories, plus departmental features. Gordon D. Shirreffs's "War at Spanish Wells" follows Dane York, who relies on silence as strategy until a massacre and merciless sun demand more forceful action. Walt Coburn's "Wild Tran" (adapted from the 1936 story "The Wagon Train Feud") depicts young Dan Wyeth's vow before his father's grave to live fast because life ends quickly. The shorter fiction includes Frank Scott York's "Death Is My Brother," depicting a pursued fugitive caught between lawmen and a partner who may be the real killer; "Rotm Is" by Hascal Giles about gunfighter Ed Gilcher gambling his life against a faster opponent; and tales of revenge, righteousness, and frontier justice by Kenneth Brent, Richard Ferber, Charley Niehuis, and George C. Appell. Regular departments include "The Prospector," a cattle country quiz, and "The Gambler Stakes His Life." The issue rounds out with extensive advertising for vocational training programs and correspondence courses.
