Puck's Presidential Impossibility: The Political Peanut Vender
Pughe, J. S. (John S.), 1870-1909, artist · October 31, 1894
J. S. Pughe's cover cartoon for Puck skewers New York Democratic senator David B. Hill, whose presidential ambitions Puck had long mocked. Hill appears as a street peddler hawking a basket labeled "Fresh Roasted (Political) Peanuts" outside the White House gates, where a sign reads "Notice! No Peddlers or Suspicious Characters Allowed on These Premises." The composition literalizes the editorial verdict: Hill's political wares are cheap, his character suspect, and the executive mansion firmly closed to him. Pughe renders Hill with the hooked-nose, jug-eared caricature common to Puck's treatment of machine politicians—an exaggerated physiognomy rooted in anti-Irish and broadly nativist visual conventions of the period. The joke lands on Hill's bossism and opportunism rather than ethnicity explicitly, but the drawn face carries that era's stock vocabulary of ethnic ridicule nonetheless.
