Thanksgiving 1905
Hassmann, Carl, 1869-1933, artist · November 22, 1905
Carl Hassmann's cover for Puck (Vol. LVIII, No. 1499) pictures a red-haired domestic servant in black dress and white apron hoisting a steaming roast turkey on a large platter above her head, holding it just out of reach of a spotted dog lunging upward at her side. Her profile is composed and slightly imperious; the dog's open mouth and raised paw inject the comic tension. The Art Nouveau wallpaper behind her—muted lotus repeats—frames the scene with fashionable flatness. The bottom banner reads simply Thanksgiving 1905. The image carries no overt political argument; it is a holiday genre piece celebrating domestic plenty, with the humor resting entirely on the servant's pragmatic struggle to get the centerpiece to the table intact.
