Puck Easter
Glackens, L. M. (Louis M.), 1866-1933, artist · March 30, 1904
Louis M. Glackens's cover for Puck No. 1413 (price: ten cents) pictures a young woman in a jester's striped skirt playing a lute while a troupe of anthropomorphic rabbit cavaliers—dressed in red coats and cocked hats, carrying small swords—dance a circle around her on an open lawn. Behind her, two tonsured monks huddle at a monastery doorway, whispering conspiratorially at the secular spectacle. The word EASTER anchors the bottom in gilt letters wreathed with lilies. The image carries no overt political argument; it is instead a seasonal set-piece playing pagan spring festivity against monastic disapproval—a mild anti-clerical joke well within Puck's habitual liberal-Protestant skepticism toward Catholic ritual gravity. No ethnic caricature is present. The Library of Congress periodicals stamp is visible on the image, dated March 29, 1904.
