New York Clipper

The New York Clipper, January 17, 1857. The dense columns of text cover dredging for oysters, theatrical gossip, prizefighting accounts, and racing news—the standard fare of America's leading entertainment trade paper. Lavishly illustrated and designed for newsstand appeal, the Clipper served as the primary pictorial and written record of stage performers, prizefighters, jockeys, and circus talent for a mass readership. As the forerunner of Variety and Billboard, it established the template for American entertainment journalism.
