Penny Dreadfuls

Young Folk's Weekly Budget

· September 21, 1878

This penny weekly serialized adventure fiction for working-class readers of all ages. The cover illustrates Kairon, the Young Charioteer, continuing a melodramatic tale of betrayal and Imperial intrigue. Five figures in classical dress—soldiers, a nobleman, and a caped woman—gesture urgently around a central chariot wheel, their expressions registering conflict and emotion typical of Victorian sensation fiction.

Penny dreadfuls and penny bloods were cheap, serialized stories that fed urban appetites for crime, horror, and exotic adventure throughout the nineteenth century. Illustrated covers and sensational plots made them ideal for working-class readers who could afford a penny per issue. These publications established the narrative momentum and visual storytelling conventions that modern comic books would inherit and transform.
