The Carpet-Bag, Vol. II, No. 18

· July 31, 1852

This weekly serial presents The Bridal Evening and After the Bathing Festival, serialized melodramas spanning two illustrated scenes. A decorative masthead frames the title with a hand gripping a carpet-bag—the literal and metaphorical vessel of working-class adventure. Such penny serials, priced within reach of laborers and servants, delivered weekly installments of sensation and scandal: seductions, betrayals, domestic crises rendered in breathless prose and crude woodcuts. These publications flooded Victorian streets, offering escape through Gothic horror and moral transgression. Later comic books inherited this formula—sequential narrative, cheap reproduction, episodic structure—translating penny dreadfuls' appetite for sensation into illustrated form.
