The Carpet-Bag, Vol. II, No. 13

· June 26, 1852

A gloved hand grips this penny paper's masthead, which frames two vignettes of Victorian domestic life. Inside, serialized stories of crime, military intrigue, and scandal awaited working-class readers hungry for melodrama at a penny per issue. Such publications flooded mid-nineteenth-century streets, offering episodic thrills—robbery, seduction, betrayal—that respectable society condemned as morally corrosive. Yet their visual exuberance and narrative velocity proved irresistible. These cheap serials, printed on poor paper and distributed weekly, established the template for sensation fiction and prefigured the comic book's hybrid form: image, text, recurring characters, and cliffhangers designed to compel purchase of the next installment.
