Penny Dreadfuls

The Boy's Own Paper

· December 4, 1880

This penny weekly serialized adventure fiction for working-class youth, featuring illustrated melodrama and excitement at a price—one penny—within reach of street children and shop apprentices. The cover depicts a chaotic bedroom scene with boys in various states of pandemonium, their nightclothes flying, while authority figures observe from doorway and bedside. Such publications trafficked in sensation: crime, daring escapes, schoolboy pranks, and moral peril overcome. Though more respectable than their sensational cousins the penny bloods, these serials offered the same addictive serialization and visual storytelling that would later animate the comic book form. Working-class readers devoured installments featuring amateur detectives, young heroes, and tales of danger and redemption—narrative structures and visual techniques that established the template modern comics still follow.
