Reynolds, George W. M. (George William MacArthur), 1814-1879 · c. 1850
# Exhibition Note
The Mysteries of the Court of London by George W. M. Reynolds, Volume VIII (Fourth Series), comprises multiple interconnected serial narratives set in aristocratic circles. The principal stories involve the investigation of a nobleman's murder—the old Earl of Lascelles—and the exposure of Makepeace, his servant, as the assassin. A lawyer named Mr. Slater conducts forensic detection to prove the crime, employing experimental evidence to establish guilt. Concurrent plots center on various young women: Armantine, Christian Ashton, Atalanta, and others navigating romantic entanglements, social intrigue, and peril at English estates and Continental locations. The narratives feature encounters with criminal characters ("the Barker"), melodramatic coincidences, and exotic elements including Indian servants and dangerous wildlife. The serial combines Gothic mystery, romance, and sensational adventure across multiple chapters indexed from LXXXII onward, with fifty-two accompanying engravings illustrating key scenes.
