# The Counterfeiter's Gold Tooth; Or, Nick Carter's Crooked Correspondent
This detective serial, by the author of "Nick Carter," follows the famous New York detective as he investigates a counterfeiting conspiracy. At Stamford station, a young man named Curtis Smart is arrested attempting to board a train while carrying a cigar box filled with counterfeit ten-dollar bills of the 1880 series. Smart is also stopped while eloping with Miss Stowell, a wealthy man's daughter.
Detective Nick Carter, already investigating the counterfeiting ring, examines the cigar box and discovers fingerprints on its surface and a torn bill fragment with peculiar zig-zag cuts—evidence of gang identification. The wrapper bears an address: Mrs. Scott Burrows, 17 Ann Street, New York. Through interrogation, Smart claims a stranger on the train gave him the box to deliver, insisting he is innocent. Carter, convinced of Smart's honesty, begins photographing the fingerprints for enlargement while a dying man arrives at the station with information about the counterfeiters.
