Black Bess; or, the Knight of the Road

Viles, Edward · 1866

This issue of Black Bess; or, The Knight of the Road contains Chapter DCCCXXXIX–DCCCXL of an ongoing serial narrative. Claude Duval, a fugitive evading officers, is mistaken by an elderly gatekeeper for "Master Jack," the absent heir to an estate. Through this confusion, Claude gains entry to a mansion where he witnesses his cousin Ralph Davids attempting to coerce the dying lord into signing a fraudulent will that would disinherit Jack in favor of Davids. When the lord expires mid-signature, Davids forges the document. Claude resolves to expose the scheme and prevent this injustice. The arrival of the actual Master Jack interrupts the scene, promising intervention. The narrative combines elements of inheritance drama, deception, and moral confrontation typical of Victorian serialized fiction.
