Beau Ogleby, Plate 72

This plate from The Comical Adventures of Beau Ogleby — an English adaptation of Töpffer's Swiss picture-stories — now shows its age: foxing, tonal shift, and vignetting have rendered the page nearly blank to the eye. What survives is the material fact of the object itself: hand-press paper, the pink-salmon bloom of slow oxidation. Töpffer's originals, produced in Geneva from the 1820s onward and circulated across Europe, established the grammar of sequential narrative art — discrete panels, figures whose expressive line drives story forward, captions locked to image in deliberate order. This plate is one of 126 in a sequence, each dependent on the last. That numbered chain is the invention.
