Two Naval Veterans Toasting Outside a Seaside Inn
· Isaac and George Cruikshank, 1806
An etching by the brothers Isaac and George Cruikshank shows two men in naval dress exchanging a handshake near a waterfront tavern, one raising a tankard in toast while a third figure sits at a table behind them. Ships ride at anchor in the middle distance. The figures carry the broad physical exaggeration typical of the Cruikshank workshop — elongated limbs, emphatic gesture — rooted in Rowlandson's fluid line and Gillray's satirical distortion. The scene belongs to a celebratory rather than attacking mode of print satire, toasting naval service during the Napoleonic Wars. This tradition of sequential-ready, gesture-driven imagery, distributed as cheap printed sheets, fed directly into the picture-story formats that became the comic strip.
