Vallende Oranjeboom (The Falling Orange Tree)

This hand-colored etching depicts the political upheaval of the Dutch Golden Age's decline. A figure representing the House of Orange—traditionally the Dutch ruling family—stands beneath an orange tree under attack from revolutionary forces: eagles with French revolutionary insignia dive from above while a rooster and goat (symbols of France and radical politics) assault from below. The text fragments scattered throughout employ the Dutch language for satirical effect.

This print belongs to the great tradition of European political satire, following Hogarth and preceding Gillray and Rowlandson. Such images circulated widely as loose sheets, influencing public opinion during moments of political crisis. The exaggerated animal forms and allegorical figures established visual conventions that would persist through 19th-century caricature into modern cartooning and sequential art.
