Engels-Kviper [English Cooper]

This engraved satirical print mocks English coopers (barrel-makers) during Anglo-Dutch commercial rivalry. A lion and cherub assist an English worker at a barrel while a Dutch figure observes—the animals perhaps signifying English heraldry or foolishness. The accompanying Dutch verses ridicule English craftsmanship and trade practices, reversing accusations of Dutch treachery with claims of English incompetence.

Produced in Middelburg by Jan Bastiaensz. Krel, this print exemplifies the political print tradition that flowered during the First Anglo-Dutch War (1652–54). Such engravings circulated nationalist sentiment through visual and textual satire, combining crude caricature with pointed commercial critique. This format—image plus explanatory verses—directly preceded the illustrated broadsheets and picture-sheets of later centuries, establishing conventions that would develop into modern sequential narrative and comic art.
