Gros Temps: Costume pour le yachting

· July 1920

This hand-colored pochoir print depicts a woman in vivid chartreuse yachting attire, striking a confident pose aboard a vessel. The figure's elongated proportions and bold yellow costume dominate the composition against a naturalistic seascape rendered in muted grays and blues. Published in a luxury fashion journal, the image exemplifies the commercial color printing tradition that emerged from 19th-century satirical prints. While earlier caricature sheets by Hogarth, Gillray, and Daumier employed exaggeration to mock social types and politics, this work uses similar distortion—the impossibly thin silhouette, oversized gestures—purely to market modern fashion. The pochoir technique allowed vibrant flat color that comic books would later adopt, creating visual language descended directly from print satire's formal innovations.
