Six Scenes from the Old Testament

This engraved title page presents six biblical narratives arranged around a central text block. The scenes depict Old Testament episodes—construction of the Tower of Babel (lower left), the Flood, the Binding of Isaac, and others—rendered in the dense cross-hatched style characteristic of 17th-century Dutch printmaking. Rather than political satire, this work belongs to the tradition of illustrated biblical instruction sheets popular in the Protestant Low Countries. The composition descends from earlier woodcut broadsheets and prefigures the didactic picture-sheets (Bilderbogen) that would flourish in 19th-century Germany. Each vignette combines narrative clarity with moral instruction, using engraving's fine lines to render both landscape and human drama. This marriage of scripture, text, and multiple sequential images anticipates the visual-verbal grammar of later comic forms.
