Prison Visit Scene from *Jack Sheppard*

George Cruikshank's steel-engraved illustration depicts a vaulted prison corridor — almost certainly Newgate — where two women in period dress press urgently against a barred grate, reaching toward a figure beyond it, while warders observe from a guardhouse further along the passage. The composition's deep perspective and arched stonework amplify claustrophobia deliberately. Cruikshank, working in the tradition running from Hogarth's Industry and Idleness through Rowlandson's social panoramas, used sequential narrative illustration to give popular fiction moral weight. His plate-work here — cross-hatched stone, precise costume rendering — belongs to the same visual grammar that would migrate, via cheap illustrated periodicals and the German Bilderbogen picture-sheets, directly into the comic strip: sequential images, expressive figures, architectural staging substituting for a panel border.
