H. E. Butzin — Auto Know Better!

This Sunday strip follows a motorist's misadventures with his new automobile. Panel one shows the driver confident at the wheel; panel two reveals mechanical trouble under the hood; panel three captures the explosive result; panel four depicts bystanders' reactions to the wreck. Butzin uses sequential art to build comic momentum—each panel advances the gag logically through visual cause and effect. The recurring character and his car anchor the narrative across frames, a storytelling method newspapers had recently adopted from European sources. Speech balloons and expressive linework carry both dialogue and physical comedy, establishing conventions that would define newspaper comics and, later, the comic book form itself.
