William Vance
1935–2018
William van Cutsem, who worked throughout his career under the pen name William Vance, was a Belgian comics artist born on 8 September 1935 and died on 14 May 2018. He became one of the more prolific and respected figures in Franco-Belgian comics, contributing as artist, colorist, inker, and writer across nearly 450 issues between 1966 and 2023.
Vance built his reputation on a grounded, realistic visual style that suited the action-driven adventure stories he gravitating toward throughout his career. He worked across a notably diverse range of titles, including *Bruno Brazil*, *Bob Morane*, *Bruce J. Hawker*, and *Zack*, demonstrating a consistent ability to bring cinematic tension to sequential storytelling. His work also appeared in the pages of *Kuifje*, the Belgian weekly magazine that served as a launchpad for many significant Franco-Belgian talents.
His most prominent association, however, was with the espionage thriller series *XIII*, a collaboration that brought him to the widest international audience of his career. The series, with its amnesiac protagonist and layered conspiracy plot, proved an ideal vehicle for Vance's sharp draughtsmanship and flair for dynamic pacing. His output remained substantial across more than five decades, leaving a body of work that stands as a meaningful contribution to the European adventure comics tradition.
