Wilhelm Busch was a German humorist, poet, illustrator, and painter born Heinrich Christian Wilhelm Busch on 14 April 1832. He died on 9 January 1908. Today he is often called the "Forefather of Comics" for his wildly innovative illustrated tales, which blended sharp verse with expressive drawings to satirize contemporary life, piety, bigotry, and moral uplift. Drawing on folk humour and a deep knowledge of German literature and art, his work became deeply influential for later comic artists and vernacular poets. Busch is best known for *Max and Moritz*, a story of two mischievous boys that directly inspired *The Katzenjammer Kids*. His illustrations appeared widely in periodicals such as *Fliegende Blätter*, *Münchener Bilderbogen*, and *Über Land und Meer*. His mastery of both drawing and verse shaped generations of storytellers. The Wilhelm Busch Prize and the Wilhelm Busch Museum continue to honor his legacy, and the 175th anniversary of his birth in 2007 was celebrated throughout Germany. He remains one of the most influential poets and artists in Western Europe.
