Vittorio Giardino (born December 24, 1946) is an Italian comic artist best known for his meticulously researched espionage and historical dramas. Born in Bologna, he initially trained as an engineer before turning to comics in the late 1970s. His breakthrough came with the spy series *Max Fridman*, a sophisticated Cold War thriller that showcased his elegant, detailed linework and gift for period atmosphere. Giardino’s other signature work includes the autobiographical *Jonas Fink* and the harrowing *A Jew in Communist Prague*, both exploring Jewish identity under oppressive regimes. He frequently collaborates with European publishers like Casterman and has been a regular contributor to *Heavy Metal Magazine* and the French anthology *(À Suivre)*. His style—crisp, cinematic, and emotionally restrained—draws from the clear-line tradition while infusing it with a darker, more adult sensibility. Giardino’s major awards include the prestigious Gran Guinigi and the Yellow Kid for lifetime achievement. He remains active, with credits spanning 1982 to 2025, and his work continues to influence European graphic novelists. Though less prolific than some peers, his focused output has earned him a devoted following among connoisseurs of intelligent, historically grounded comics.
