Thierry Smolderen
Thierry Smolderen, born 25 November 1954 in Belgium, is a comics writer and essayist whose work bridges the intellectual and the adventurous. He is best known for scripting the long-running series *Gipsy*, a Western with a supernatural edge, which he co-created with artist Enrico Marini. Smolderen’s path into comics began in the 1980s, and he quickly established himself as a thoughtful storyteller with a taste for historical and psychological depth. His collaborations include work with illustrators such as Marini and Philippe Berthet, notably on *Ghost Money* and the *Olivier Varese* series. He also contributed to *Heavy Metal Magazine* and the German-language series *Die Hölle der Pelgrams*. Smolderen’s scripts often explore themes of identity, exile, and moral ambiguity, and his essays, such as those on the history of comics, reveal a keen analytical mind. His co-creations include *Cygan*, another series with Marini. Later in his career, Smolderen continued to write both fiction and nonfiction, solidifying his reputation as a versatile and literate voice in European comics. He has received recognition for his contributions, though specific major awards are not documented in available sources. His work remains influential among readers of Franco-Belgian bande dessinée.
