Theo van den Boogaard
b. 1948
Theo van den Boogaard, born 25 March 1948 in Castricum, Netherlands, is a Dutch cartoonist who also worked under the name Theo Bogart. He first gained notice in the early 1970s as an underground cartoonist with the sexually explicit series *Ans en Hans krijgen de kans* (Ans and Hans Get the Chance). Van den Boogaard is best known for co-creating the long-running comic strip *Sjef van Oekel*, based on a television character by writer Wim T. Schippers. His clean, expressive linework and sharp comedic timing made the strip a staple of Dutch comics. Over a career spanning from 1972 to 2024, he contributed as artist, colorist, inker, letterer, and writer on 41 issues, with his most credited titles including *Sjef van Oekel*, *U-Comix*, *U-Comix präsentiert*, *Cairo*, *StripGlossy*, and *De ideograaf*. In 1989, he received the Stripschapprijs for his body of work. Van den Boogaard’s influence endures in Dutch comic art, particularly for his role in bringing adult, satirical themes to the medium.
