Steve Purcell

Steve Purcell was born on July 30, 1961, in the United States. He is best known as the co-creator of the irreverent freelance police duo Sam & Max, a property that has spanned comic books, an animated television series, and multiple video games. After graduating from the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland in 1982, Purcell began his career drawing strips for the school paper. He freelanced for Marvel Comics and Fishwrap Productions before self-publishing the first Sam & Max comic in 1987. His work caught the attention of LucasArts, where he was hired as an artist and animator in 1988. At LucasArts, he contributed to classic adventure games including the first two Monkey Island titles, *Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade*, and the Sam & Max game *Hit the Road*. Purcell later collaborated with Nelvana on the 1997 Sam & Max TV series and spent a brief period at Industrial Light & Magic. He joined Pixar, where he co-wrote and co-directed the 2012 film *Brave* and developed the *Cars on the Road* miniseries. In 2007, he received an Eisner Award for his work on the Sam & Max comics. His catalog for our database includes 26 issues as artist, inker, or writer from 1986 to 2008, with notable credits on *Defenders of Dynatron City* and *Alpha Flight*.
