Philippe Druillet was born on 28 June 1944 in France. He is a pioneering French comics artist and writer, best known for his visually explosive, psychedelic science-fiction work and his role as a co-founder of the seminal magazine *Métal Hurlant*. Druillet’s path into comics began in the mid-1960s, and he quickly became a defining force in the medium’s visual evolution. His signature style is a dense, ornate, and often monumental blend of baroque detail, cosmic horror, and graphic design, most famously realized in the space-opera series *Lone Sloane*. He also created the mythic fantasy *Yragaël* and the dark, atmospheric *Die Nacht* and *Chaos*. Druillet frequently collaborated with writer Jacques Lob and was a key figure in the French “bande dessinée” revolution alongside peers like Jean Giraud (Moebius). His work on *Métal Hurlant* and *Schwermetall* (the German edition) cemented his international influence. Later in life, his innovations in visual design extended to digital art and sculpture. Druillet’s legacy is that of a visionary who pushed comics toward high art and abstract expressionism. He has received major awards, including the Grand Prix de la Ville d'Angoulême in 1988, honoring his lifetime contributions to the medium.
