Peyo
1928–1992
Pierre Culliford was born on 25 June 1928 in Belgium and worked throughout his career under the pseudonym Peyo — a name that would become synonymous with one of the most recognizable franchises in comics history. He passed away on 24 December 1992.
Peyo is best known as the creator of The Smurfs, the blue, mushroom-dwelling creatures who first appeared not in their own series but as supporting characters within his earlier strip Johan and Peewit — a medieval adventure comic that showcased his gift for blending humor with straightforward fantasy storytelling. That unexpected debut would eventually spin off into a full-fledged Smurfs universe spanning comics, animation, and merchandise around the world.
His catalog was substantial: credited as artist, writer, colorist, inker, and letterer across more than 400 issues, Peyo contributed to flagship publications including Spirou and Pif Gadget, with his work also published in German and Swedish editions of the Johan and Peewit series, reflecting the wide international reach his strips achieved during his lifetime.
Working within the Franco-Belgian comics tradition, Peyo demonstrated a clean, expressive ligne claire-influenced style well suited to all-ages storytelling. His contributions to the medium extended from the mid-1950s well into the decades that followed, and his creations have continued to be published posthumously, ensuring that his legacy remains active long after his death.
