Nobuhiro Watsuki
Nobuhiro Watsuki, born Nobuhiro Nishiwaki on May 26, 1970, in Tokyo, Japan, is a manga artist best known for creating the samurai epic *Rurouni Kenshin: Meiji Swordsman Romantic Story*. Serialized from 1994 to 1999, the series became a global phenomenon, selling over 70 million copies and spawning multiple anime adaptations, films, and a sequel, *Rurouni Kenshin: The Hokkaido Arc*, which began in 2017. Watsuki entered the manga industry through weekly magazine competitions, honing a dynamic, detailed style that blended historical drama with fluid action. His other works include the Western-inspired *Gun Blaze West*, the supernatural battle series *Buso Renkin*, and the horror-tinged *Embalming: The Another Tale of Frankenstein*. He mentored several prominent artists, including *One Piece* creator Eiichiro Oda and *Shaman King* creator Hiroyuki Takei. Watsuki’s collaborations often involved assistants who later became major figures, though his own output slowed after *Rurouni Kenshin* concluded. In 2018, he was convicted for possession of child pornography, a legal issue that impacted his career and public standing. Despite this, his work on *Rurouni Kenshin* remains influential, and he continues to produce new chapters of the Hokkaido Arc. He has received multiple awards, including the Shogakukan Manga Award for *Rurouni Kenshin* in 1999.
