Nina Matsumoto
Nina Matsumoto, born 18 November 1984, is a Japanese-Canadian cartoonist who works under the pen name "space coyote." She is best known for creating the manga-style series *Yōkaiden* for Del Rey Manga, as well as the webcomic *Saturnalia*. Matsumoto entered comics through her own online work before being hired as a penciller on *Simpsons Comics* and the *Bongo Comics Free-for-All!* anthology. She also illustrated the graphic novel *The Last Airbender Prequel: Zuko's Story*. Along with writer Ben Hatke, she co-created and illustrated the *Sparks!* graphic novel series for Scholastic Books. Her art blends clean, expressive linework with a playful sense of character design, often leaning into humor and fantasy. Between 2007 and 2021, she contributed to thirty issues across titles including *Simpsons Comics Presents Bart Simpson* and *Yokaiden*, handling pencils, inks, colors, and letters. While no major awards are recorded for her work, Matsumoto remains a distinctive voice in all-ages and licensed comics, respected for her versatility across both creator-owned and franchise projects.
