Marjane Satrapi, born November 22, 1969, in Rasht, Iran, and died June 2026, was an Iranian-French graphic novelist, filmmaker, and children's author. She is best known for her autobiographical graphic novel *Persepolis* (2000–2003), which chronicles her childhood during the Islamic Revolution and her teenage years in Vienna. The book's international success made her one of the most widely read Iranian authors globally. She co-directed the 2007 animated film adaptation, becoming the first woman nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. Satrapi's other major works include *Chicken with Plums* (2004), a fictionalized family tragedy, and the collaborative graphic novel *Woman, Life, Freedom* (2023), documenting Iran's 2022 protests. Her style blends stark black-and-white ink drawings with a deceptively simple, expressive line, often tackling political and personal themes with dark humor. She also directed the biopic *Radioactive* (2019) about Marie Curie. Satrapi's career spanned 23 credited comic book issues between 2000 and 2021, with her catalog including translations such as *Huhn mit Pflaumen* and *Kylling med svisker*. She received numerous honors, including the Angoulême International Comics Festival Prize for Best Album and the PEN/Newman's Own First Amendment Award, and her work remains a cornerstone of autobiographical and political comics.
