Lafcadio Lee
Richard E. Hughes, who also wrote under the pen name Lafcadio Lee, was born in 1909 and died in 1974. An American writer and editor, he is best known for his long tenure at the American Comics Group, where he served as editor from the company’s founding in 1943 until its closure in 1967. During the final decade of that run, from 1957 to 1967, he wrote the majority of the publisher’s stories under various pseudonyms. His most celebrated creation is Herbie Popnecker, a character he co-created with artist Ogden Whitney under the name Shane O’Shea. Hughes’s work for ACG spanned a wide range of horror and mystery titles, including *Unknown Worlds*, *Uncanny Tales*, *Forbidden Worlds*, *Reign of Terror*, *Sinister Tales*, and *Adventures into the Unknown*. His writing, often published under pseudonyms, helped define the publisher’s distinctive, offbeat tone. Though his career was largely confined to ACG, his influence on the company’s output was profound, and his later work remains a point of interest for collectors of pre-Code and Silver Age horror comics.
