Kazuo Koike was a highly influential Japanese manga writer, novelist, screenwriter, and entrepreneur, best known for his gritty, violent, and artfully crafted seinen manga. He was born on May 8, 1936, in Japan, and died on April 17, 2019. Koike entered the manga world as a writer (gensakusha), forging a path that would reshape the medium. His most celebrated work is the epic samurai saga *Lone Wolf and Cub*, created with artist Goseki Kojima from 1970 to 1976. He also co-created the revenge thriller *Lady Snowblood* with Kazuo Kamimura (1972–1973) and the crime drama *Crying Freeman* with Ryoichi Ikegami (1986–1988). These series, along with their numerous film and television adaptations, are credited with helping to popularize Japanese pop culture internationally. Koike’s signature style blended historical detail with raw, visceral action and complex, morally ambiguous characters. He frequently collaborated with top-tier artists, bringing his dense, cinematic narratives to life. In our catalog, he is credited as a writer on 144 issues, with his most prominent titles including *Lone Wolf and Cub*, *Crying Freeman*, and *Samurai Executioner*. Later in life, he founded a school for manga creators, nurturing new talent. Koike’s legacy is that of a master storyteller whose work pushed the boundaries of the medium and left an indelible mark on comics worldwide.
