Jidéhem
Comics debut 1957
Jean De Mesmaeker, who worked under the pen name Jidéhem — derived from the initials JDM — was born on 21 December 1935 and spent the better part of six decades contributing to Franco-Belgian comics. He died on 30 April 2017.
A product of the Marcinelle school tradition, Jidéhem built his reputation primarily through his long association with the influential magazine *Spirou*, where he worked alongside André Franquin on two of that publication's cornerstone series: *Spirou et Fantasio* and *Gaston Lagaffe*. His involvement with the latter was substantial enough to earn him shared co-authorship credit over several years — a meaningful distinction given Gaston's enduring place in Belgian comics culture.
Beyond his collaborative work, Jidéhem developed his own original properties. He is perhaps most warmly remembered for *Sophie*, a series centered on a spirited and adventurous young girl whose appeal proved genuinely durable. He also created *Ginger*, and contributed to *Starter* and *Uhu-man*, demonstrating a range that extended well beyond his supporting role on more prominent titles.
Over a career logged across more than 550 issues in various capacities — as artist, writer, colorist, inker, and letterer — Jidéhem left a quiet but substantial mark on the tradition he inherited, particularly in the warmth and clarity he brought to character-driven storytelling for younger readers.
